I’m Gen X and grew up in Germany. Like most Germans my age, I had grandparents who lived in Nazi Germany. They were actual Nazis.
To most Americans, Nazis are cartoonishly evil bad guys in movies. Demons in uniforms.
MAGA Americans think Hitler and the German Nazis were pretty badass. MAGA Nazis look up to German Nazis.
Both my grandfathers were actual Nazi soldiers.
As a teenager, I asked them about their lives in Nazi Germany. They reluctantly told me stories, with shame in their voices.
One of my grandmothers was a doctor. One of the first female doctors in Germany. And one of the first female automobile drivers in Germany. She was a force of nature. Brilliant woman. And she hated Hitler.
My other grandmother was a homemaker. She didn’t have a lot of education. She married young. Now she was a sweet old lady, but she was dumb. Ignorant. Unschooled. She loved Hitler.
She made the best Black Forrest cake I’ve ever had. And she was an enthusiastic Nazi. She wasn’t evil. Just very very ignorant and misinformed.
She told me “Hitler was a great man. He made Germany great again! He built the Autobahn!”
When I told her that my teachers in school said Hitler was a monster, my grandma told me they’re lying. “Fake news!”
I asked her about the Holocaust. My Nazi grandma said: “Fake news! The Holocaust didn’t happen! Hitler would never do something like that! But if he did, the Jews totally deserved it! Those bastards killed Jesus!”
And she said that with the conviction of a dumb woman who is totally convinced that the dumb shit she says is absolutely true.
Just like your typical MAGA dumbfuck, when they repeat one of Trump’s obvious lies with cocky certainty, as if it were the truth.
Dumb people are too dumb to know when they’re being lied to.
That’s why Nazi dictators are able to use lies as a weapon, to turn dumb people into bloodthirsty Nazis.
My German Nazi grandma believed exactly the same racist bullshit about immigrants and minorities, that MAGA Nazis believe today.
Nazis like Hitler and Trump use lies as a weapon, to demonize minorities and incite hate and violence.
Trump is using all the same lies that Hitler used to turn ignorant people like my grandma into bloodthirsty Nazis.
Trump is imitating Hitler in broad daylight, while his MAGA Nazi cult cheers for the end of democracy.
Trump is turning American democracy into a tyrannical dictatorship right in front of our eyes.
This has happened over and over again in history. For example in Nazi Germany, or in Putin’s Russia.
Is any of this information causing any kind of emotional reaction in you? A sense of impending doom?
If it doesn’t, it’s because you’re not taking it seriously. And that’s because of your normalcy bias.
Normalcy bias causes people to underestimate the likelihood of a disaster or other catastrophic event occurring.
People with a normalcy bias tend to believe that since a disaster has never occurred before, it will never occur in the future. They consider extreme events to be irregular and dismiss them as irrelevant.
This bias can lead to a false sense of security and can have serious consequences if it causes people to ignore potential threats.
You think peace and democracy in America is normal, because that’s all you’ve ever known in your life.
You think it’s normal to have running water, electricity, internet, and wifi. You think it’s normal to have enough to eat.
Historically, none of that is normal. This is peak convenience. Unprecedented.
Your life so far has enjoyed the perks of the very peak of human civilization. Nobody in history had a better life than you do right now. You live better than royalty did a couple of hundred years ago.
That is about to change. Your life is about to get worse than anything you’ve ever experienced as an American.
But don’t take my word for it. Let the experts on fascism tell you:
You may think they’re crazy libtards with Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Nope. They’re very smart serious people. And they know a whole lot more about history and dictators like Hitler, than you do.
And they see what’s happening, clear as day, in broad daylight:
I see it too. Every German sees what’s happening in America right now, because we all had Nazi grandparents who saw this before with their own eyes, and lived through it themselves. They were active participants.
Our German grandparents swooned over Hitler. He was so dreamy.
Look at the adoring crowds of Nazi Germans cheering for Hitler like he’s a movie star. Remind you of someone?
Every German today had relatives alive in Nazi Germany, being actual Nazis, doing actual Nazi stuff.
Here’s the truly scary part: They were normal people. Our grandparents weren’t monsters. They did normal, boring stuff. Like baking Black Forrest cakes.
They were normal people, and Hitler used lies as a weapon, to turn these normal people into bloodthirsty Nazis.
And it’s happening again right now. In broad daylight, for all to see.
But many Americans don’t see it. Because they’re ignorant. And that’s how ignorance is gonna get us all killed.
An important lesson from Nazi Germany: Dumb people are more dangerous than evil people.
Ignorance will destroy America like it destroyed Germany during the Nazi era.
Have you ever tried to convince a brainwashed MAGA dumbfuck that he’s been brainwashed? Of course they don’t believe you, because they’re brainwashed.
They’ve been conditioned to not believe anything you say. They’re proud of themselves for ignoring anything you say.
That’s how dumb people act when they’re convinced they’re right. And that’s my Nazi grandma in a nutshell.
Decades after Hitler’s death, she was still under his spell. And no matter how many historical documentaries described gruesome details of Holocaust concentration camps, she steadfastly refused to believe it, even decades later, because her beloved Hitler told her the Holocaust is “fake News.”
And that’s the level of brainwashing we’re dealing with in the MAGA Nazi cult.
Many Americans can’t see it. But experts on fascism, and your average German, can.
Very big, very bad stuff is happening in America right now. And if your reaction to this is “meh,” it’s because of your normalcy bias.
You’re biased by your experience of what you think is normal. You disbelieve information that contradicts your idea of what’s normal and true. And you underestimate the danger you’re in.
People tend to believe that what is normal for them, is normal for everyone else too. And what is normal for them now, will always be normal.
The problem with that way of thinking is that when something big and bad is happening, you ignore the signs, because you can’t possibly imagine that your normal life is going to change.
Fascism experts can tell you until they turn blue in the face, that Trump is literally imitating every step Hitler took on his path to the Holocaust, and you’re just not gonna believe it. Because that just sounds too crazy to be true.
But people who lived in Nazi Germany, they know it can happen. And they can tell right away when it’s starting to happen again.
And they say it’s happening again right now. Don’t ignore them.
What Trump is doing is not normal. This shit is serious. We’re all in danger.
