That is some of the scariest stuff I’ve ever seen! These people are lunatics! I was brought up Catholic, educated to love and care for others, regardless of religion, nationality or sexual preference. They also taught me critical thinking so that I can understand the difference between truth and lies, between right and wrong, between good and evil. I can draw logical conclusions based on facts and data. So I guess I’ve been woke my entire life! Some of these maga freaks are just doing it for the money, which is disgraceful, but the larger population are lemmings who lack the ability to think for themselves. Those are the people that need that Ghandi moment and I hope, I pray it comes for them!

I agree. That’s where family plays a strong role. If you’re taught that you’re better and more deserving than everyone else, chances are you’re going to grow up to be a greedy self-centered a$$.

And yet the Supreme Court is dominated by right-wing Catholics. Just goes to show that some can have the same faith, learn the same catechisms, but turn out to be horrible, hateful individuals.

Ẅhen my mind was opened to these truths,

I truly lost it. I couldn't believe we were the bad guys. But now I know it.

Lots of evidence. Now I feel we have to work for a REAL revolution, one that includes ALL of us. Educating everyone and sticking to the REAL history and truths and protecting the vulnerable.

We woke White people have to do the work and DO IT NOW. No time to waste,

MFers.

I saw the Clockwork Orange movie (read the book also a million years ago). The roving gangs in the story were really cruel and awful (kind of like ICE but with more personality and humor). I found the 'cure' truly cringe worthy (it's right up there with snake pits And lobotomies). Ghandi seemed like slow and steady wins the race (and a lot of peaceful determination). When I was young I was fond of 'cowboy movies' (mainly I liked the horses). However, it never missed my attention that the 'boys' got to ride and wear the cool fringed jackets and the 'girls' were stuck in those yucky dresses back home on the ranch doing housework (or sewing and having kids). I rebeled against this notion. I remember thinking ... I don't want to be a boy but I'd rather be able to do the 'boy' things (seems they had more power over their own autonomy). Anyway, I also rejected the idea that all Indians were bad and often thought there's was a more interesting lifestyle. I hated when the white men came in and wiped out all the buffalo, and spread starvation and smallpox. Stealing land like they were entitled. Seems as though that same white man's arrogance is running rampant through the MAGA Republican Party.

Mr. Malloy, thank you for your clear, comprehensive article. Great work, so relevant and resonating with both huge challenges and critical keys. You may have seen what our current Pope Leo XIV said: "To be called 'woke' in a world that sleeps through suffering is no insult - it is GOSPEL. Woke means awaken by compassion."

(I confess to using his words when the criticism of 'too woke' is hurled at me.) Again, excellent - keep it up.

The hard right have a new adjective to replace politically correct or do gooder. It’s puerile nonsense when they are oblivious to the original meaning of woke being concerned about social justice and racial equality. Those concepts are foreign to them.

When I was a kid being "hip" was akin to being "woke." It simply meant that you were aware, on top of, and couldn't be fooled by... When did "woke" become something other than what it truly means? The hype about it is super annoying and ignorant!

“A bit of the old ultra-violence,” Alex says with relish. Haven’t re-watched “A Clockwork Orange” since 1973, but that phrase pops into my mind whenever I see ICE beating people up. “Singin’ in the Rain” was ruined for me after a scene in which Alex sings it while cutting off a woman’s clothes with a knife.

Wow... just wow...

Ya know, they seem to follow the Old Testament and forget the New Testament... in which Jesus said to 'love thy neighbor as yourself'... and he included zero exceptions.

Jesus also fed the poor, healed the sick, and so on and so forth...

The Old Testament is about a vengeful god... 'Fear the Lord your God' and 'Beware the wrath of God'...

The New Testament was about love and peace and a forgiving God...

We always heard the statements of "Kill in the name of God", yet we never heard "Kill in the name of Jesus"...

I was raised in a very strict Catholic household, my Mum (stepmother) was a nun in the convent who left said convent to marry my Dad and take care of him and his five children, me being the youngest and just a wee lad... It was all very Sound of Music and Julie Andrews...

I went on to become an Altar Boy, and later, a Lector.

I was a Boy Scout (Catholic~funded organization) and even studied rigorously to achieve the prestigious Ad Altare Dei Award.

I am 62+ and have been an Agnostic borderline Ateist due to the hypocrisies I saw rampant in the church.

I do not follow any organized religion as a result, yet, I live a good, decent Christian~style life... and according to the late great Pope Francis, people like me and my Wife (Atheist from birth) often live a more Christian~like life than many so~called devout Christians...

We live that life because it is simply the right way to be, not because some invisible dude in the sky says I have to.

With the banning of immigrants, how far back generationally should they go because if you consider it even the indigenous came to the Americas from somewhere else. 🤔

A Clockwork Orange (movie and book) had a huge impact on my teenage psyche. Some of those images still play in my mind. Media, especially visual media, can be such a powerful force in changing attitudes and educating people about the world. I'm sure the MAGA followers would love to return to the days before ads showed women as anything other than perky housewives, or before black (or mixed race) families bought cars, or before gay people had kids, etc. Some of the biggest truth tellers these days are from the entertainment industry (love those South Park guys). Great that the NFL is sticking with Bad Bunny. I hope the entertainment folks (Colbert, Kimmel, Meyers etc), continue to show their resistance for the sake of all of us.
