Why did Americans watch while their immigrant neighbors were rounded up?

We are every bit as cowardly as we claim the Germans were in the 1930s-1940s

Yes but the impact is negligible. Trump and his Nazi followers are hardly impressed by protests.

We hold the German accountable for what happened when the Nazis took control. We blame them for not “fighting” the Gestapo and resisting Nazi oppression of Jews. Yet, other than the occasional protest there’s no resistance to the Nazis that currently occupy our country. No one is shooting at ICE. No one is doxxing ICE agents. There are no street battles against ICE. No one is filling jails in protest of ICE raids.

And I include myself in this cowardice. I now know what I would have done in 1930s Germany - basically nothing….

Your point is well taken. 77M people voted for Harris. 5-6M marched against Trump at No Kings 1. We’ll see what the numbers are at No Kings 2 (Oct 18), and more importantly, at The Fall of the Trump Regime — a sustained mass mobilization in DC to dispose the fascists beginning Nov 5. It’ll take millions but so-called resistance organizations like Indivisible refuse to support it because it’s not their event. Stupid turf wars while the regime gets stronger everyday. It’s history repeating itself: in the 1930s, the socialists and the communists were more concerned about fighting against each other than they were fighting against the true enemy: Hitler’s Nazis.

Brainwashed is too nice a word. They bought in to hatred and acted lethally and cruelly toward Jews and others because that’s what awful people do.

It’s far more complicated than anything America has. But basically a long history of anti Semitism combined with a history that emphasizes performance and ethics over anything created a situation in which Jews were either successful or expendable. But whatever.

Nazis like Hitler or Trump use lies as a weapon, to demonize minorities and incite hate and violence. In Germany, the targeted minority happened to be Jewish. In America, the minority is Mexican. It’s literally the same playbook. Trump is following Hitler step by step.

Actually, in both cases, there were/are multiple targets. Yes, a primary target as you pointed out, but many others, many of which are the same in both groups: racial minorities, religious minorities, sexual minorities, ideological outgroups, immigrants of various origins...

Yes, true. For example in Germany, besides the well known yellow star for Jess there was a pink hook for homosexuals.

And MAGA, like Trump, hate not just Latinos but also Jews, they're not official targets just yet. And afaik private prisons are not yet officially used as concentration camps and probably not even unofficially besides alligator Alcatraz.

When I was assigned to the Air Force Weapons Lab I met a German born technician married to a lady from Tennessee. Although she met his mom when they got married the took a trip to Germany to meet his extended family. She took classes in conversation German before the trip to better communicate with his family that didn’t speak English.

While there, his Uncle played a recording from Hitler’s propaganda minister made a week before the fall of Berlin, but after hearing the propaganda it sounded as if Germany was winning against the allied forces and General Eisenhower.

Two results of their trip was (1) the realization that propaganda can be so compelling especially since he knew what happened a week later; (2) his mother marveled at the fact that she never heard her German language spoken with a Tennessee drawl.
